How to Move from Knowing About God to Knowing Him

Understanding the Difference

Many people know about God, but not everyone has a personal relationship with Him. They may read Bible stories, listen to sermons, or know different teachings about Jesus. However, knowing facts about someone is not the same as knowing that person personally.

Think about a friend. You cannot build a strong friendship just by hearing stories about them. You need to spend time together, talk, listen, and understand each other. The same idea applies to building a relationship with God. It requires faith, trust, and a desire to follow His words.

Start by believing in Jesus.

The first step towards knowing God is believing in Jesus Christ. The Bible teaches that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day.

Romans 10:9 says that if we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved.

This means accepting Jesus as the Lord of our lives. It is not just about saying that we believe in Him. We must also trust His words and accept what He has done for us. Even though we did not see these events happen, we can believe through faith and the message shared in the Bible.

Read the Bible and Understand His Words.

A personal relationship with God grows when we learn about His words. The Bible is not just a religious book. It teaches us about God’s character, His promises, and the way He wants us to live.

Start by reading a few verses every day. Take time to understand their meaning instead of rushing through several chapters. Think about how those words connect with your daily life.

For example, when the Bible teaches us to forgive others, we should try to apply that lesson in our relationships. In this way, reading the Bible becomes more than a daily habit. It becomes a way to understand God and follow His guidance.

Repent and Change Your Way of Living

Knowing God also means being ready to change. We all make mistakes, but God asks us to turn away from sinful actions and follow His ways.

Acts 3:19 teaches us to repent and turn back to God so that our sins may be wiped away.

Repentance is not simply feeling sorry after doing something wrong. It means making a real effort to leave those actions behind. If we have hurt someone, we should try to make things right. If we have been dishonest, we should learn to speak the truth.

These small changes help us develop a stronger relationship with God.

Grow Through the Holy Spirit

God has also promised to give His Holy Spirit to those who believe in Him. According to Ephesians 1:13-14, believers are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit helps us understand spiritual things and guides us towards a life that pleases God. As we grow in faith, we can learn to become more patient, loving, humble, and forgiving.

John 14:21 also teaches that those who keep the commandments of Jesus show their love for Him.

Knowing God is not only about learning what He says. It is about trusting Him, following His instructions, and allowing His words to shape the way we live each day.
